EFCC Warns Nigerians Against 58 Illegal Investment Companies

In a decisive move to protect the Nigerian financial space and safeguard citizens from fraudulent investment schemes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a strong warning about the operations of 58 companies masquerading as legitimate investment entities. These companies, according to the EFCC, have been engaging in deceptive practices that defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard-earned money.

Regulatory Status of the Companies

The EFCC’s investigation revealed that none of the 58 companies are registered with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the Security Exchange Commission (SEC). Both regulatory bodies, in separate communications with the EFCC, confirmed that these entities lack the necessary authorization to operate as investment firms in Nigeria.

Legal Actions Taken

The EFCC has taken significant legal actions against these fraudulent companies:

  • Five companies have been convicted.
  • Another five companies have pleaded guilty and are awaiting a review of the facts.
  • The remaining cases are pending arraignment in court.

These actions underscore the EFCC’s commitment to cracking down on fraudulent investment schemes and ensuring justice for victims.
