About the role
Own the architecture and delivery of Java-based fintech payment platforms, with hands-on responsibility for Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS) and Visa Cybersource integrations. Prior production experience with both gateways is required.
Design secure, resilient transaction flows from checkout and 3-D Secure authentication through authorisation, capture, refunds, settlement, and reconciliation. Partner with finance, risk, and operations teams, guide technical decisions, and mentor engineers building systems that move real money.
What you'll do
- Design Java and Spring Boot payment APIs and maintain MPGS and Visa Cybersource integrations
- Own payment state transitions, idempotency, safe retries, duplicate prevention, and recovery from ambiguous gateway responses
- Implement tokenisation, 3-D Secure flows, authorisation, capture, voids, refunds, and gateway notifications
- Design auditable transaction records, ledger integrations, settlement reconciliation, and exception handling
- Apply PCI DSS-aware engineering practices, protect payment credentials, and keep sensitive card data out of application logs
- Lead payment incident investigations, performance reviews, automated testing, and technical mentoring
What we're looking for
- 5+ years building production Java applications, including substantial fintech or payment-processing experience
- Hands-on production integration experience with both Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS) and Visa Cybersource
- Strong Spring Boot, SQL, and API design experience
- Deep understanding of card payment lifecycles, 3-D Secure, tokenisation, settlement, reconciliation, and chargeback workflows
- Experience with financial data integrity, concurrency, idempotency, and fault-tolerant distributed systems
- Working knowledge of PCI DSS, secure credential handling, and payment data protection
- Confidence with automated testing, Docker, and CI/CD
- Clear communication and experience guiding other developers
Nice to have
- Experience with acquiring banks, payment orchestration, or multi-currency settlement
- Experience with fraud controls, dispute handling, and event-driven financial systems
